Abstract:
China Advanced Research Reactor(CARR)is a multipurpose and high performance research reactor.The design features,on adopting advanced technologies and design philosophies,layout of overall system and components,establishing the operation mode and applications of the reactor,have been sum up in this paper.These distinguishing features reflected the advanced merit,safety performance,economics and innovatives of CARR and the present level of research reactor design in China.The construction and operation of CARR will certainly make contributions to provide an important scientific research platform for the development of China Institute of Atomic Energy(CIAE).

Abstract:
CARR is a multipurpose research reactor with high performance.The inverse neutron trap structure,which is convenient for the layout of horizontal neutron beam and vertical irradiation tube,is applied.The comprehensive platform of CARR covers the following research and experiment field:neutron scattering(NS)experiment,radioisotopes(RIs)production,fuel and material irradiation test,neutron transmutation doping of silicon(NTD),neutron activation analysis(NAA),neutron radiography(NRG),boron neutron capture therapy(BNCT)and personnel training. This paper describes briefly the application,physics design,structure design and the associated equipment and system of CARR.

Abstract:
CARR fuel assemblies are manufactured and used for the first time in China.To ensure the integrity and the safety of the fuel assembly under CARR operation conditions,CARR Project Department arranged a series of design validation tests,such as the tests for structure stability,flow-inducedvibration(FIV),critical velocity,heat circulation,in-pile irradiation and etc.The test results indicated the design and manufacture of CARR fuel assembly are reasonable,and the fuel assembly will be stable and safe under CARR operation condition.

Abstract:
The engineering design of CARR is with complicated technology and interface.By enhancing the leaderships and clarifying the responsibility of every designer,all the quality assurance activities are effectively controlled by detailed process documents and operation documents in terms of technology and management.It is shown that the organizational structure we adopted is appropriate,the responsibility and authority are well defined to meet the design requirements and the corresponding duties are fulfilled.The quality assurance system is in conformance with the laws and regulations,and can meet the needs of CARR engineering design.It provides an effective guidance for the success of CARR engineering design.

Abstract:
China Advanced Research Reactor(CARR)is of tank-in-pool type,cooled and moderated by light water and reflected by heavy water.The rated nuclear power is 60 MW.It consists of 21 plate-type fuel assemblies.The fuel meat is made of U3Si2-ALx dispersion and the cladding is made.of 6061 aluminum alloys.The reactor has a small core with high heat flux and high coolant velocity.All these characteristics result in the difficulties in the safety design of CARR.Many measures have been taken in CARR design in order to assure the safety of the reactor.For instance,ATWS mitigation system,adequate main pump inertia, enough natural circulation ability,passive flapping valves for natural circulation and ECCS(Emergency Core Cooling System)supported by UPS are adopted at the same time.The accidents analysis results indicate that CARR is with high inherent safety and the safety measures are effective.

Abstract:
Flow blockage accident often happens in research reactors with plate-type fuel assemblies.In this paper,the flow blockage accident of China Advanced Research Reactor(CARR)is analyzed on the assumption that the inlet of one assembly is blocked when the reactor is operated at the rated power.The reactivity,reactor power,pressure,flowrate,temperature that is changed with time in the accident is calculated with Relap5/Scdapsim\Mod3.2.The effect of the blocked standard fuel assembly on the ambient fuel assemblies is also given.The results show that the blocked assembly will melt but it does not cause the burnout of the rest assemblies.It proves that this type of accident can be controlled within the limit by the safety measures for CARR.

Abstract:
The neutronics analysis of China Advanced Research Reactor is carried out with the diffusion method by using the whole core module in this paper.Based on the critical calculation of thecore of different periods,the reactivity and the neutron flux and power distribution from the 1stcycle to the 3rdcycle are given. The burnup calculation of CARR is done in the indirect way.In the calculation,the burnup distribution of CARR is given and the fraction of the fission productions is obtained.Meanwhile the reactivity of the fission poison is analyzed in this paper.

Abstract:
Hot Water Layer(HWL)of China Advanced Research Reactor(CARR)is a layer of hot water on the top of the reactor pool.It prevents the lower water containing radioactive material reach the surface of the pool through convection,so as to drop down the radiation level of the reactor hall.This paper calculated the heating power required to construct the HWL with experience relations,and analyzed the flow and temperature field of the reactor pool using computational fluid dynamics software CFX.The results imply that the heating power rate of CARR HWL is 120kW,the HWL is formed in the top of the reactor pool,but uneven,and the average thickness of HWL is about 1.8m.

Abstract:
Cold Neutron Source(CNS)is one of the important systems through which China Advanced Research Reactor(CARR)could be used as important application platform of Neutron Scattering Experiment. This paper establishes the calculation program and methods to analyze the nuclear heating and gain factor. Many factors have bean calculated and optimized for the CNS in CARR and the neutronics scheme is decided. The results show that better gain factor can be approached with relatively low nuclear heating for moderator cell,which is accorded with the characteristics of CARR CNS and is a new crescent cell configuration in the world

Abstract:
A new cooling scheme on moderator cell for Cold Neutron Source(CNS)in China Advanced Research Reactor(CARR)is brought forward,which is considered to resolve the thermal-dynamic difficulty of CARR CNS such as the high heat flux from cell wall to liquid hydrogen owing to high nuclear power of CARR and low enrichment of Uranium,the special operation model of off-CNS while reactor is on.The simplified model is founded from the cooling scheme and the calculation program is compiled.Then,the capacity of heat exchanging is calculated.The equation,which implies the self-regulation characteristics of CARR CNS,is derived and established.The self-regulation analysis has been carded out for CARR CNS by analysis of this equation.The result shows that this cooling scheme could overcome the difficulties in high heat flux and operation model of CARR CNS,and is endowed with self-regulation characteristics.

Abstract:
This paper performed the piping stress analysis and calculation of the secondary cooling water system in CARR using the software PIPSTRESS,according to the different characteristics of the piping and the connected equipments.Different measures are taken to optimize the positions,types and directions of the supports and hangers,and the appropriate values of the piping stress and nozzle loads are gained.The results show the piping stress analysis and evaluation of the secondary cooling water system satisfied the PIPSTRESS codes.

Abstract:
How to cool down the reactor core after shutdown is one of the most important safety problems for CARR.ECCS of CARR is a high capability and credibility system with two purposes:One is to cool the pool water in the normal condition and the other is to cool the core in emergency.These designs,including no manpower interruption and automatic matching,will widen the method and accumulate the experiences for domestic research reactors and also testify that CARR is safe,economical and advanced. This paper first introduced the function,main parameters and flow chart of the CARR ECCS,considering the nuclear safety code and guide.Based on the real condition of CARR,this paper also analyzed the typical accidents and the shutdown cooling of the ECCS,and demonstrated how the ECCS carded out the passive cooling at normal and accidental shutdown.

Abstract:
The design thoughts and methods for heavy water tank and Guiding tank of China Advanced Research Reactor(CARR)are introduced in this paper.The structures of the devices are described in detail, and the difficulties met in the design are analyzed.Based on the design & manufacture of the CARR core flow-induced vibration test model and the test results,the parametrical modeling and dummy assembling of the devices are carried out with three-dimensional mechanical design software,to improve and optimize the design,and thus to ensure the accuracy of the device interfaces,and to resolve the design difficulties.At present,the construction design is completed,and the devices are under manufacture.

Abstract:
This paper introduces the function,the operation condition and the system setting of the habitability air-conditioning system of main control room for China Advanced Research Reactor,and analyzes the cooling load computing of the main control room.The result shows that this air-conditioning system can not only meet the requirements on temperature and humidity in the main control room under the normal operation conditions,but also the requirements on the habitability for the operators under the accident conditions.

The control system for ventilation system of CARR is an important part of I&C system of CARR.It uses a distribution control mode with centralized management,which is a Distribution Control System(DCS).R uses PID module to achieve automatically control.It has achieved a high level in roboticized and reliability.The paper introduces the function and constitution and technology characteristics of the system.
